Uganda’s women’s basketball team, the Gazelles, capped off their impressive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket campaign with a dominant 85-44 victory over Guinea in the battle for seventh place.
In a commanding display, the Gazelles, who made their best ever Afrobasket finish, started the match impressively and led 14-10 after the opening quarter.
The point-difference grew bigger at halftime as Uganda led by 15 points.
Jannon Otto and Jane Asinde led the way with 21 and 15 points respectively, despite being withdrawn early as head coach Alberto Antuna handed playing time to the rarely used players.
Despite the second half changes, the Gazelles didn’t relent as they kept pushing and pouncing, eventually winning by a 41-point difference.
The likes of Hope Akello and Melissa Akullu shined in the second half as they put up nine points each. Akello added a decent 13 rebounds.
The victory was a fitting end to a successful tournament for the Gazelles, who also trounced heavyweights Senegal earlier in the competition.
Uganda finished seventh overall, their best ever finish at the Afrobasket.
