Ugandan athletes Oscar Chelimo and Olympic Champion, Joshua Cheptegei impressively made it to the finals of the 5000m at the ongoing Oregon World Athletics Championships.
In a Friday morning race, Chelimo clocked 13:24.24 to finish first in heat one to put himself in a good position for a medal come Monday at 4:05 am East African Time.
In the same vein, Cheptegei finished fourth in the same heat to also make it to the finals, and is now poised to win his second medal at the Championships.
Grant Fisher and Ethiopian Selemon Barega finished second and third respectively in the Friday run.
The other Ugandan, Peter Maru in heat Two, failed to go progress despite a great show in the opening laps. Maru clocked 13:47.65 to finish 14th in a heat two won by Kenyan Jacob Krop who beat Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Uganda has so far won two medals in Oregon including gold by Cheptegei and bronze by Jacob Kiplimo in the 10,000m.
