The spotlight shifts to Toronto on Saturday as co-hosts Canada begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina, hoping to follow Mexico’s winning start to the tournament.
Playing in front of a home crowd at Toronto Stadium, Canada enter the Group B clash carrying the expectations of a nation eager to make its mark on football’s biggest stage.
While Canada are in the tournament as hosts, Bosnia and Herzegovina earned their place the hard way, defeating Italy in a penalty shootout during qualification to secure only their second World Cup appearance.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch believes his players are ready for the occasion despite the pressure that comes with opening a home World Cup.
“My job is to prepare the players, giving them the best opportunity to go out and be free, know their roles and be themselves,” Marsch said.
The former Leeds United manager has been encouraged by the team’s consistency and believes their quality and character will help them handle the moment.
Bosnia coach Sergej Barbarez accepts his side are outsiders but insists they have arrived determined to earn respect.
“We are a small country. This is our second ever World Cup and we are an underdog in many of the matches ahead,” Barbarez said.
“We want to show our best to the whole world and earn respect by showing what we can do on the pitch.”
The other Group B fixture will see Switzerland take on Qatar.
Elsewhere, co-hosts United States open their Group D campaign against Paraguay in Los Angeles, aiming to give the home fans another reason to celebrate.
USA coach Mauricio Pochettino expects a stern test against the South Americans, praising both their quality and competitive spirit.
“My expectation is that it is going to be a very tough game,” Pochettino said. “Paraguay are competitive, aggressive and have a great coach in Gustavo Alfaro.”
Alfaro, who guided Paraguay back to the World Cup through the South American qualifiers, said the occasion means everything to his players and supporters.
“It has been a countdown from the moment we secured qualification,” Alfaro said. “We know this isn’t just another game. At the World Cup, everything happens quickly and the details can make all the difference.”
With Mexico already off to a winning start, Canada and the United States now have the chance to keep the hosts’ momentum going as the 2026 FIFA World Cup gathers pace.
All 104 matches of the tournament will be broadcast live on DStv across four dedicated FIFA World Cup channels. Everything Can Wait and fans can follow every moment of football’s biggest event from kickoff to the final whistle.
