For Qatar, this is only a second World Cup appearance after making their debut as hosts in 2022. The Gulf nation secured qualification for this year’s tournament at the expense of the UAE and will be eager to claim a first-ever World Cup win.

Coach Julien Lopetegui will look to star forward Akram Afif for inspiration. The striker has already scored 39 goals for his country and remains Qatar’s biggest attacking threat.

Switzerland, meanwhile, arrive with far more World Cup experience. The Europeans are appearing at the tournament for the 13th time and have not failed to progress beyond the group stage since 2010.

Under Murat Yakin, the Swiss are favourites to qualify from the group once again. Their squad includes experienced match-winners such as Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo and Zeki Amdouni.

The two nations have met only once before, with Qatar claiming a surprise 2-1 victory in a friendly in 2018.

Later, attention shifts to Group C where five-time champions Brazil take on Morocco at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Brazil enter the tournament chasing a first World Cup title since 2002. Their last campaign ended in the quarterfinals, and expectations are high under Carlo Ancelotti, the first foreign coach to lead the Selecao.

However, the South Americans will begin without Neymar Jr. Ancelotti confirmed the veteran forward could miss all three group matches through injury.

Despite that setback, Brazil remain one of the favourites. No nation has won more World Cup matches or titles, and they remain the only team to have appeared in every edition of the tournament.

Morocco, who made history by becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal in 2022, will also be missing key players. Centre-back Nayef Aguerd and winger Abde Ezzalzouli are unavailable, with Marwane Saadane and Amine Sbai stepping into the squad.

The Group C action continues later in the morning with Scotland facing Haiti before Austria take on Turkey.

All 104 World Cup matches will be broadcast live on DStv’s dedicated FIFA World Cup channels, ensuring fans do not miss a moment of the action.
