For years, Africa’s World Cup story has been defined by promise, heartbreak and near misses. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, that narrative is shifting fast.
Only Senegal and Morocco reached the last 16 in 2022. This time, Africa has gone far beyond that, a record nine African nations have reached the knockout stage, the continent’s strongest showing in World Cup history and a clear sign of its growing impact on the global game.
Morocco once again lead the way. After their historic semi-final run in Qatar, they arrived with pressure and expectation and delivered. Drawn in a tough group with Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, they opened with a hard earned win over Scotland before a thrilling victory over Haiti put them in control. An unbeaten group stage, finishing level on points with Brazil, confirmed their place in the Round of 32, where they face the Netherlands.

South Africa also wrote a new chapter. After an early setback against Mexico, they regrouped and fought their way back with a crucial result against Czechia before sealing qualification with a 1-0 win over South Korea. It is their first ever World Cup knockout appearance, a landmark moment for Bafana Bafana.

Ivory Coast responded well after losing their opener to Germany. Wins over Ecuador and Curaçao secured second place in their group and a return to the knockout stage for the first time since 2014, showing balance and composure when it mattered most.

Senegal endured a difficult start with defeats to France and Norway, but came alive when it counted. Their 5-0 win over Iraq secured progression as one of the best third-placed teams and produced the biggest win ever by an African side at a World Cup.

Debutants Cape Verde have been one of the tournament’s biggest surprises. Draws against Spain and Uruguay, followed by another disciplined result against Saudi Arabia, earned them second place in their group and a historic knockout berth on their first appearance.

Ghana bounced back strongly after a tough draw with England and a win over Panama. Despite a narrow loss to Croatia, their earlier results were enough to send them through to the last 32.

Egypt also advanced unbeaten, with Mohamed Salah leading the way. A win over New Zealand and draws against Belgium and Iran secured their place in the knockout stage after a controlled, disciplined group campaign.

The Democratic Republic of Congo produced one of the stories of the tournament. A draw with Portugal and a decisive win over Uzbekistan sent them through to the Round of 32 after a long absence from the global stage.
Algeria completed Africa’s historic nine team surge. After an opening loss to Argentina, they recovered with a win over Jordan and a dramatic draw with Austria to secure qualification in a tense finish.

Tunisia, however, struggled throughout. Heavy defeats to Sweden, Japan and the Netherlands ended their campaign without a win.
Even so, Africa’s overall picture is striking. More teams than ever have survived the group stage, and several now carry real belief into the knockout rounds. Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast and the rest have already reshaped expectations.
