2026 Uganda Open: Luutu secures Seniors crown after rivals Bagabo, Pirani shoot out of bounds

There were no whistles or music playing on the 18th hole of the Uganda Seniors Open. The gallery was also modest, given that the tournament concluded on a Sunday morning, three days after teeing off on Friday.

In the end, the last man standing was Elijah Luutu, who held off a spirited comeback from Joseph Bagabo.

Having created daylight between himself and the field with a magnificent round of 72 on opening day, Luutu struggled to replicate his Friday form on Saturday.

By the time play was called off due to poor visibility after the 15th green on Saturday, Bagabo had extraordinarily pulled within two strokes of the leader. It was a heroic effort, considering Luutu had started the day with an eight-stroke advantage over him.

However, Bagabo wasn’t the only one piling pressure on Luutu. Hassan Pirani hurled his name into contention, teeing off on the 16th on Sunday morning just one shot behind the leader.

It was a lead group in the truest sense of the word. Pirani, however, fell out of contention after going out of bounds right upon the resumption of play.

On the 17th, Bagabo, who had picked up a stroke on Luutu with a par on the previous hole, sunk a birdie to take a share of the lead after Luutu settled for par.

By this point, it had turned into squeaky-bum time: Bagabo was clearly in the ascendancy while Luutu felt the heat from his unrelenting rival. “I didn’t feel the pressure,” Luutu claimed afterwards.

Bagabo missed the fairway on the 18th, whereas Luutu planted his ball in prime position.

On the approach, Luutu comfortably hit the green while Bagabo went out of bounds attempting to curve his shot onto the green from the left rough.

Although Bagabo composed himself to salvage a hard-fought double bogey, Luutu’s par was more than enough to give him the cushion needed to secure his first Seniors Open title.

“This trophy ranks at the top of everything I have won in the game,” a delighted Luutu noted. “I never thought I would even participate in the Seniors tournament.”
