Back home for a short holiday, Ugandan badminton legend Edwin Ekiring left The Olive School in Namugongo Nsawo with a full heart over the weekend.
The silver medalist at the All-Africa Games, four-time Commonwealth Games competitor, and two-time Olympian was invited to mentor the next generation of shuttle players.
After being greeted by the school’s impressive infrastructure, Ekiring was left speechless by the modern boarding pre-primary and primary school’s existing sports facilities, as well as its ambitious plans for expansion.
Mr. Richard Omumwa, the school’s principal, disclosed to Ekiring and his team that they plan to construct a multipurpose indoor facility by the end of next year.
“We believe in sports, and plans are already underway for an arena and a 50-meter swimming pool to expand our sports complex,” Mr. Omumwa stressed, adding that their ultimate dream is to groom future national stars at The Olive School.
The retired professional, who now coaches in the Netherlands, was so impressed by the school’s vision that he donated badminton equipment to help support their efforts.
Reflecting on his own journey—which started at Nsambya Sharing Centre before an invitation to a training camp in Germany opened international doors—Ekiring shared his story with the pupils and advised them to set small, achievable goals.
“I have won a lot, but it all started with a single championship at Lugogo. Don’t focus on the Olympics just yet; your target right now should be the Under-12 nationals,” Ekiring noted.
“After becoming a champion at the junior level, target the seniors, then the East African region, before dreaming of continental glory. It will all work out as long as you stay focused and disciplined.”
Under the watchful eye of Mable Irene Namakoye, a former national team player who represented the country at numerous international events, the pupils are in good hands with four courts already at the School.
