Despite playing out a dull stalemate with Mali in the final preparation match ahead of the African Nations Championships (CHAN), Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevich was left savouring on the abilities and displays of youngsters Travis Mutyaba and Titus Ssematimba.
Micho’s men were drawing a third game in succession on Sunday, following earlier 2-2 and 1-1 deadlocks against Sudan and Cameroon respectively, but the gaffer had something to write home about.
“I am happy that despite us looking for performances from the team, we’re also grooming the future stars,” said the 53-year old after the Mali game.
“Ssematimba has yet again shown what we have always seen, his work rate and contribution in today’s game and readiness to play number 10, I believe he has knocked on the door to the first eleven.”
“After the CHAN, I believe Ssematimba and Mutyaba will he ready to go and help the U-20 (in the Egypt AFCON) and give their the best.”
“I believe he (Ssematimba) is knocking on the door and several football people have been asking me about our future stars and of course, I can’t miss recommending those two.”
The Serbian was also generally left pleased with the spirit within the team, underlining that, it’s all they have to hold onto for a triumphant tournament in Algeria.
“I give credit to all the players, everyone gave everything,” started the tactician after the Mali impasse.
“We are never saying never, we are never giving up and the players are really representing the respect for their families and country.”
The Pearl of Africa is pitted in Group B for the Algeria edition, along with Senegal, Ivory Coast and Democratic Republic of Congo, with their opener against the latter on January 14.
