Great Lakes MT20: Victoria Strikers continue resurgence behind Ssesazi heroics

Simon Ssesazi’s explosive batting display powered Victoria Strikers to a second straight victory as they defeated Bunyonyi Warriors by 59 runs on Day Seven of the Great Lakes Men’s T20 at Lugogo Cricket Oval.

After choosing to bat, the Strikers made a flying start through Ssesazi, who smashed 58 off just 24 balls, striking eight fours and three sixes. His aggressive knock set the tone for a strong total.

Amos Ahurra added 40, while Robert Ajuna chipped in with 19. Mathew Musinguzi then provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 22 from 11 deliveries as Victoria Strikers posted 218/8.

Bunyonyi Warriors struggled to keep the scoring under control and were further hurt by 20 wides. Johnathan Nyiiro picked up three wickets, while Musa Majid Ramathan and Kassim Adam claimed two and one respectively.

Chasing 219, Bunyonyi started brightly but lost momentum as wickets fell regularly. Joseph Baguma top-scored with 31, Anas Baig made 30, and Ramathan remained unbeaten on 18, but none could build the partnership needed to challenge the target.

Victoria’s bowlers then took charge. Captain Pius Oloka produced a brilliant spell of 4/14, while Jaffer Ochaya also claimed four wickets. Christopher Kidega and Musinguzi picked up a wicket each as Bunyonyi were bowled out for 159 in 18 overs.

Ssesazi was named Player of the Match for the second time this tournament after laying the foundation for Victoria’s convincing win.

Earlier, Mburo Blasters ended Kyoga Avengers’ winning momentum with a 26-run victory in the morning game.

Charles Musemeza starred with 75 off 40 balls as Mburo posted a tournament-high 234/6. Riazat Ali Shah added a rapid 54 off 24 deliveries, while Gerald Olipa claimed five wickets for Kyoga.

In reply, Cyrus Kakuru fought back with 77 off 43 balls and captain Juma Miyaji remained unbeaten on 45, but Kyoga finished on 208/6. Steven Wabwose, Sowobi Yunus and Riazat Ali Shah shared six wickets to seal the win.

Despite the defeat, Kyoga Avengers remain top of the standings with 10 points, followed by Mburo Blasters on eight. Victoria Strikers have moved up to six points, while Bunyonyi Warriors remain on four.

The tournament continues on June 19, with Victoria Strikers taking on Kyoga Avengers before Bunyonyi Warriors face Mburo Blasters.
