Mercy Kongai delivered a moment to remember as she powered Light Secondary School to a dominant 185 run win over Kasese Secondary School on Monday at the Girls Schools Cricket Week in Gulu.
Her brilliant century not only set up the victory but also secured her place in the tournament’s history.
Kongai became just the third player to score a century at the event, and her knock was only the fourth ever recorded.
She now joins Masaka SSS’s Proscovia Alako, who has two centuries, and Olila High School’s Jimia Muhammad.
Kongai was in control from the start. She struck 110 off 65 balls, hitting 13 fours and 2 sixes with confidence and ease.
Even after Susan Akidi fell early, Kongai steadied the innings and built a strong partnership with Alio Ritah, who added 51 runs.
Late contributions pushed Light Secondary School to 216 for 4 in 20 overs.
Kasese never recovered in the chase, Light’s bowlers kept things tight and picked wickets consistently.
No Kasese batter reached double figures as they were bowled out for just 31 in 15.4 overs.
Anyait Teddy took three wickets, while Kulume Ruth and Tino Sarah picked up two each in a disciplined performance.
It was a complete display from Light Secondary School, but the day belonged to Kongai. Her century stood out for what it means in a tournament where such milestones are rare.
Elsewhere, St John’s SS Mukono, Olila High School, and Masindi SS were among the other teams that registered convincing wins on a competitive day of school cricket.
Sacred Heart SS and Mt St Henry’s School edged through tight, low scoring matches
Ndejje SSS and Masaka SS also handled small targets with ease, showing calm under pressure.
In the afternoon, the gap in quality showed. Olila High School and Jinja SSS recorded heavy wins, while St John’s SS Mukono and Light SS stayed in control with convincing performances.
