Lugazi FC have made their biggest statement ahead of the new season by unveiling experienced tactician Abbey Kikomeko Bogere as their new head coach.
The former BUL FC manager has signed a two-year contract and arrives with a clear mission: to turn Lugazi from a side battling for survival into one competing at the top end of the Uganda Premier League.
Kikomeko is among the most respected coaches in Ugandan football. During his time at BUL, he guided the club to back-to-back FUFA Super 8 titles in 2023 and 2024 and led them to a historic second-place finish in the 2023/24 league season.
After his unveiling, Kikomeko said Lugazi’s ambition and organization convinced him to take the job.
“I feel excited after being appointed the Lugazi FC head coach,” he said.
“It’s a good club with good facilities and is very organized. I have been watching the team play and seeing its organization, and this enticed me to take up the opportunity.”
The CAF A licensed coach was quick to set the tone for what supporters should expect under his leadership.
“My policy is always to compete for trophies, and under my regime here, we are going to compete for them. I have not come just to spend my time here,” he said.
With Lugazi preparing for their third straight season in the top flight, Kikomeko believes the club should now aim higher than simply avoiding relegation.
“It is no longer new in the top division. We are not going to take part in the league just to fight relegation; we are going to compete,” he added.
Kikomeko has also built a strong reputation for developing young talent. He helped Kirinya-Jinja SS, now Busoga United, earn promotion to the Uganda Premier League in 2016 and guided Jinja Secondary School to the Copa Coca-Cola title in 2017. He has also coached Mbale Heroes.
In announcing the appointment, Lugazi FC said Kikomeko’s experience, leadership and ability to nurture players made him the ideal choice to lead the club’s next chapter.
As he takes charge immediately, Lugazi fans will hope the arrival of one of the country’s most accomplished coaches can help transform the club from league survivors into genuine contenders.
