Uganda Rugby Fraternity has joined thousands in mourning the untimely death of Michael Betungura Bewatte, a student who was stabbed to death at Makerere University.
The former rugby player with Black Pirates feeder side Sailors and a son of a legislator from Mitooma Li District was killed in a clash during last-minute campaigns.
His former club led teammates, opponents and fans in paying tribute to the young talented soul.
What they said
“We mourn our brother and former teammate Bentugura Bewate Micheal. May his soul Rest In Peace and we pray the Almighty comforts the family and friends as we go through this tough period. #SailorsStrong #Makerere,” Sailors pinned tweet read.
“Today we mourn Bewate. I pray it will be the last time we mourn for having conflicting ideologies. Yes, we should die for our cause; but when it gets to killing for that cause, then we should question our ultimate purpose for the beliefs we hold,” Conrad Wanyama a Pirates and Rugby Cranes player who shared a training ground with the deceased noted.
“Pics of the young lad that has passed on have really broken my heart. He was a strong guy with whom we shared a Rugby Club both as fans and him as a player in the Feeder Team. We always chanted ‘Strong’ while our club played. May the lad’s soul RIP! Your promising rugby career cut short!” Arguably Pirates loudest male fan Bruno Akampa noted.
The second-year law student at Uganda Christian University (UCU) Kampala Campus in Mengo was allegedly stabbed with a broken bottle in a scuffle involving two camps in the guild elections.
Bewatte died at Makerere university hospital where he was rushed while bleeding profusely. His body was later conveyed to the city mortuary at Mulago Hospital for postmortem.
“We have cordoned off the area, statements are still being recorded and CCTV footages will be retrieved to aid in the ongoing investigations. More details will be availed as soon as they are available,” Uganda Police noted.
With investigations in high gear, we pray justice prevails. Rest in peace Bewatte.
