Uganda Rugby Union has today morning confirmed the cancellation of this year’s Elgon Cup.

The rugby matches played on a home and away basis featuring Uganda and Kenya will not happen for the third straight year.

The last outing was at Kyadondo Rugby Club when Kenya swiftly avenged a home loss to a young Ugandan side coached by the late Robert Seguya.

Unlike for 2020 and 2021, when the reason was the global pandemic which had sports forcefully banned, this time around Kenya Rugby Union’s position has been informed by economic hardships and the political season the country is in currently.

The Ugali nation is heading into their presidential elections and on the flip side, the Simbas, Kenya national rugby team had to rely on a public fundraise to make it to France for the African World Cup qualifiers.
