The Rugby Cranes Sevens will miss the 2026 Rugby Africa Sevens in Mauritius after travel restrictions linked to the Ebola outbreak ruled Uganda out of the tournament.
Uganda Rugby confirmed on Wednesday that the national team will not take part in the continental competition following a decision by Mauritian authorities to temporarily bar entry to travellers who have recently been in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo or South Sudan.
The development is a major setback for the Rugby Cranes, who were preparing to compete against Africa’s top sevens nations in a tournament that also carries significance for international qualification pathways.
In a statement, Uganda Rugby said the decision was beyond its control and was guided by public health measures put in place by Mauritius.
The union, however, remains hopeful that Uganda’s ambitions on the international stage will not be completely derailed. Discussions are ongoing between Uganda Rugby, Rugby Africa and the Rugby Committee to explore alternative routes to HSBC Division 3 qualification.
“We remain committed to the safety of our players, staff and supporters and will provide updates as discussions progress,” Uganda Rugby said.
The withdrawal means Uganda’s sevens players will have to wait longer for another opportunity to test themselves on the continental stage, with their absence highlighting the continued impact health emergencies can have on sport.
