Uganda’s athletics stars will converge at Uganda Christian University (UCU) Sports Ground in Mukono this Saturday for the 24th Akii-Bua Memorial Track and Field Championships, an event that celebrates the legacy of the country’s greatest athletics icon.

Organised by Uganda Athletics, the annual championship honours John Akii-Bua, whose unforgettable victory in the 400m hurdles at the 1972 Munich Olympics remains Uganda’s finest moment on the track.

Akii-Bua stunned the world when he won gold in a world-record time of 47.82 seconds, becoming the first athlete to run the event in under 48 seconds. More than five decades later, that mark still stands as Uganda’s national record.

This year’s meet will feature 22 events, including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m races, as well as long jump, shot put, discus and javelin for both men and women.

Beyond honouring the Olympic champion, the competition carries added importance for Uganda’s upcoming athletes. It will serve as the final qualification event for the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Oregon, USA, in August, while also helping athletes prepare for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this summer.

Akii-Bua’s rise to Olympic glory remains one of sport’s most remarkable stories. After beginning in the 110m hurdles, he switched to the 400m hurdles and quickly established himself among the world’s best. In Munich, he defeated favourites David Hemery of Great Britain and Ralph Mann of the United States to claim a historic gold medal.

Although he never had the chance to defend his title following Uganda’s withdrawal from the 1976 Montreal Olympics, his achievement secured his place among Africa’s sporting greats.

Akii-Bua later served as a coach and sports administrator before his death in Kampala in 1997 at the age of 48.

As athletes take to the track in Mukono this weekend, they will not only compete for medals and qualification standards but also honour the enduring legacy of the man who put Uganda athletics on the world stage.
