It was agony and heartbreak for Esther Chebet after a quite powerful run for her in the women’s 5000m final could only bring her home fourth, just outside the medals, despite her setting a personal best of 14:50.70.
Push though she might, Chebet just couldn’t match the finishing power of the Australian pair of Rose Davies (14:44.53) who also won the 10,000m final on Monday, and Jessica Hull (14:45.01) who took Gold and Silver. She also couldn’t catch home favourite Megan Keith (14:49.10) from Scotland over the final 300m stretch either.
It was a commendable effort from her though as she left the rest of the field, including teammates Joy Cheptoek (10th) and Rebecca Chelangat (12th), in her wake.
Of note is that for the second consecutive long distance race at the games, Esther Chebet has finished fourth, having done so in the 10,000m final on the opening day of the athletics program and still like yesterday, with a 31:55.70 personal best time.
In the morning races, Maureen Chebet failed the women’s one mile as did Leni Shida and Maureen Akiiki Banura in the women’s 400m semi final.
