Peruth Chemutai finished third in the women’s steeplechase final after completing the 3000m event in 9:09.96 to win Uganda it’s third medal at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The gold medal at the EDF Scotstoun stadium was won by Kenya’s Faith Cherotich in a games record time of 9:01.76 while England’s Elise Thorner took the Silver in an event that Peruth has finished third at consecutive games.
“We came into the final knowing that it’s going to be difficult against a younger Faith Cherotich. But at least, we expected Silver. Where the English lady came from, only God knows” said Coach Paul Okello.
“Though it shouldn’t be an excuse, we weren’t helped by the cold weather” he added. The Bronze marked her second at the Games having won a Bronze in Birmingham 2022.
On a sad note, Uganda’s other hope for a medal also disappeared when former World champion Halimah Nakaayi finished sixth in the women’s semi final heat 2 in 2:03.36.
In the men’s one mile, Silas Chemutai finished seventh in a season best time of 3:57.32 and narrowly missed out on qualification to the final, while Domenic Krop was tenth in his heat in 4:07.63.
Action on the track resumes today, as Maureen Chebet will contest the one mile with Maureen Banura and Leni Shida in the women’s 400m semi final.
Still on track this evening, the trio of Esther Chebet, Rebecca Chelangat and Joy Cheptoyek will need to bury frustrations from the 10,000m early this week when they contest the women’s 5000m final.
