Day two of the track and field program at the EDF Scotstoun Stadium failed to yield the desired results, as athletics coach Paul Okello blamed the weather. The track was waterlogged as the heavens continued to pour throughout the race.
Uganda started with the 400m heats, which climaxed with Leni Shida and Maureen Banura qualifying for the women’s semifinals. Unfortunately, the highly billed men’s duo of Eric Okwi and especially Haron Adoli failed to progress in the heavy rain.
“The girls ran at around 10 a.m. in good conditions, but by the time the men started, the rain had altered the conditions,” said Coach Okello.
In the evening session, Uganda expected better results but still ended the day without a podium finish in the men’s 10,000m final, in which Samuel Simba Cherop (setting a personal best of 27:56.68), Dan Kibet, and Oscar Chelimo finished 7th, 11th, and 12th respectively.
Wednesday starts with the first round of the men’s mile, where a spot in the final is the target for Silas Chemutai and Domenic Kirop, the only warriors who will be donning the black, yellow, and red colours.
The evening session will feature Halima Nakaayi in the women’s 800m semifinals, followed by the women’s 3000m steeplechase final, in which Peruth Chemutai will seek to improve on her bronze medal from Birmingham 2022.
