Uganda lost one of its medal hopes in the boxing category after Nuhu Batte’s journey at the 2026 Commonwealth Games came to an end last night following a loss on points to Englishman Patris Mughalzai at the Scottish Event Campus.
However, the Bombers captain will leave with his head held high after winning two bouts at the Games—his first over Nigerian Abdulwahab Abdulramon in the round of 32, followed by a round-of-16 elimination of India’s Yadav Pratap.
Uganda’s first woman in the ring in Glasgow, Emily Nakalema, also lost on points to Australia’s Eve Bryson. “I tried my best, but unfortunately I couldn’t secure progression,” said Nakalema.
Still, of all the boxers competing at the Games, none has generated as much public interest as Aziz Abdul, also known as “Ringo,” who is the grandson of the late Ugandan President Idi Amin Dada.
“Ba ssebo, when is Aziz fighting? Temubanga mwamujeko,” wrote Ugandan football goalkeeping coach Billy Kiggundu on social media in Luganda. Kiggundu’s eager anticipation is shared by thousands across Uganda, Scotland, and around the world beyond the Commonwealth community. “Yeah, I have waited a long time for this, and I am happy that my time has come. I promise to give it my best, for God and my country,” the vibrant Ringo said.
His journey in boxing has often mirrored the legacy of his grandfather, himself a boxer in his day who was widely renowned for stating that the only way to eliminate doubt about a fight’s outcome was to win by knockout.
