Uganda narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the women’s 10,000m final at the EDF Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow last night, as top finisher Esther Chebet came fourth with a new personal best of 31:55.70.
Her teammate Joy Cheptoyek finished sixth in 32:01.92, while Rebecca Chelangat stopped the clock at 32:16.28 in a race won by Australia’s Rose Davies.
Neighbours Diana Wanza of Kenya and Florence Niyonkuru of Rwanda took silver and bronze respectively.
A little earlier, Halima Nakayi kept her quest for a Commonwealth Games medal alive with a spirited run in the third heat of the women’s 800m competition, finishing third in 2:04.33 to qualify for the semifinals on Wednesday.
Tuesday offers another exciting day for Uganda in athletics, featuring the men’s 10,000m final with Oscar Chelimo, Samuel Simba Cherop, and Dan Kibet.
Knight Aciru starts her journey to one-mile glory, while Maureen Banura, Leni Shida, Haron Adoli, and Eric Okwii compete in the women’s and men’s 400m heats respectively.
