Team Uganda was officially flagged off for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, by the Prime Minister of Uganda, the Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja.
At the ceremony this afternoon at the Mestil Hotel in Kampala, the Prime Minister urged the 55 athletes to go and make Uganda proud. She expressed her delight at the inclusivity of the squad, which features 34 women and 21 men.
The State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, announced that as part of their basic facilitation and performance incentives, each member of Team Uganda will receive $300 per night spent in Glasgow. Furthermore, cash rewards of Shs 100 million, Shs 50 million, and Shs 30 million are up for grabs for gold, silver, and bronze medalists, respectively.
“Well, that will be in addition to a monthly stipend of Shs 5m, Shs 3m, and Shs 1m for those same medalists for a duration to be announced. The members of Team Uganda also received daily allowances during their final two weeks of training,” Minister Ogwang added.

Joining the Minister in rallying the team were the British Deputy High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E. Tiffany Kirlew; the Chairman of the National Council of Sports (NCS) Board, Ambrose Tashobya; the NCS General Secretary, Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel; and the Uganda Olympic Committee’s (UOC) Moses Mwase, who represented Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare.
In Glasgow, Uganda will compete in athletics, boxing, netball, 3×3 basketball, cycling, and judo, as well as swimming and weightlifting, both of which will field para-athletes. Presidents of the respective National Federations attended the flag-off ceremony alongside various team officials.
Team co-captains Husnah Kukundakwe (Para-swimming) and Nuhu Batte (Boxing) spoke on behalf of the athletes. They promised maximum effort and top-tier performances as Uganda aims to build on the 58 medals the country has amassed over 15 editions since its debut in 1954.
Following the ceremony, Team Uganda was hosted to a departure dinner at the British High Commission.
