Weatherhead Hockey Club will seek to end Wananchi‘s monopoly in the National Hockey League over the weekend when the league returns after a long break.
The weekend will come with the closing games of the 2023 season, and Weatherhead will be hopeful they will finally deny Wananchi another league triumph.
The two rivals head into the final weekend with the former leading the table standings, but that’s just on goal difference as Wananchi have the same number of points (47).
All Weatherhead have to do for them to end Wananchi’s five-year dominance is to better Wananchi’s result. But they can also lift the trophy without having to even kick a ball.
Should Rockets beat Wananchi, Weatherhead will be declared champions without even having to break a sweat. This is because Wananchi play on Saturday while Weatherhead take to the field on Sunday against Kampala Stallions.
Aside from the top two, there’s nothing much to play for, for the rest of the teams. KHC are safely placed third with 37 points, six ahead of Rockets.
Rockets are also safely placed fourth five points ahead of City Lions, but that doesn’t mean they will be there for the taking. Both teams are expected to give their respective opponents a run for their money.
Individually, the race for the golden boot is also between these two teams. Both Jordan Achaye (Wananchi) and Thomas Opio ( Weatherhead) are on the top of the charts with 32 goals while Opio’s teammate Collins Batusa is just two goals behind.
