Netball League: NIC still the team to beat as Super League returns

Record Netball Super League winners National Insurance Corporation netball club will once again be the team to beat as the league throws off.

The defending champions remained a strong side as they did not release any of their squad members. However, they will have to fight for their 22nd title.

“As NIC we are always ready and our target from the start is to win, we come all out for whatever is on the table, we fear none but we disrespect none because we believe that every team comes in the league with its own ambitions.”

“We as players, we always give our best to reward our bosses and coaches because of what they inject in us.”

Joan Nampungu, NIC captain in her words.

In the challenger’s corner, KCCA Netball Club made sounding signings from UCU in; Hanisha Muhammad, Vivian Lukowe and Prudence Nakato, the trio is expected to strengthen the Kasasiro girls squad.

Going by the performance they showcased during the East African Games and the additions, it is right and just to call them title contenders.

“We were not happy last season that we finished second, our target as KCCA was to win that trophy and since then we have been planning and training hard to see that we win it this season, currently we are physically and mentally fit and ready for the season.”

Irene Eyaru, KCCA captain noted.

The other two clubs that are likely to put up a challenge are, the new kids on the block, Weyonjo Netball Club and Prison Netball Club, a side that has rich experience in national team players.

“Since we heard that the league is commencing on 24th, September, we intensified our training and we are set, our main target is to change from the position we finished last season, we want a better one, third, second or even take that trophy.”

Said Weyonje captain Shakirah Nassaka.

Since 1995, only three clubs have managed to win the league, that’s NIC (21 times), Prison (three times) and Posta Netball Club (once).

The big question is, will this new season give birth to a new winner or will it be the old brooms sweeping clean all corners of the league. Our guess is as good as yours our reader.

First round will climax on 10th December 2022 at Kamwokya-TLC ground and the answer will be halfway ready.
