NEC wrapped up Matchday 23, edging Maroons 1-0 at Lugogo, with Richard Basangwa’s first half goal sealing a hard earned win in the Uganda Premier League on Saturday.
The hosts started brightly, pushing forward from the first whistle, but Maroons stayed compact and dealt well with the early pressure. Chances were few as both sides battled for control.
The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute. Basangwa reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, tapping home after a moment of hesitation from the Maroons defense.
Maroons improved after the break and tried to force their way back into the game, but their attacks lacked sharpness in the final third. NEC stayed organized and saw out the match with discipline.
The win makes it three in a row for NEC, after victories over Police and URA. They move up to fifth with 40 points, while Maroons remain ninth on 29 after 23 games.
Next, NEC FC Visit Express FC on Tuesday April 21 while Maroons make a trip to Kamwenge where they face Mbarara City on the same day.
