- Vipers SC 1-1 URA FC
URA FC dealt Vipers SC a blow in the Uganda Premier League title race after holding the league leaders to a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Friday.
The Tax Collectors produced a disciplined display and nearly walked away with all three points before Arafat Usama rescued the Venoms early in the second half.
URA stunned the home crowd in the 35th minute when Ronald Otti rose highest to head in Isma Mugulusi’s free kick past goalkeeper Denis Kiggundu.
The visitors looked more confident after taking the lead and continued to trouble Vipers. John Innocent Kisolo almost added a second goal with a long-range strike, but Kiggundu made a comfortable save.
Vipers returned from halftime with more urgency and quickly found the equalizer. Ashraf Mandela’s long throw created confusion in the URA box before Hilary Mukundane’s effort hit the crossbar, allowing Usama to head home in the 49th minute.
The game became more physical as both sides searched for a winner.
URA suffered a setback when defender Bright Joseph Vuni limped off injured, forcing changes at the back.
Vipers introduced Yunus Sentamu Junior and Glodi Beyuku midway through the second half to add fresh energy in attack, but clear chances remained limited.
Abdul-Karim Watambala later wasted a free-kick opportunity when he fired off target.
URA stayed organized defensively and slowed the game whenever possible as the hosts pushed forward in the closing minutes.
Fred Amaku and goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi Kusiima were both cautioned late on as pressure mounted.
Despite Vipers’ late attacks, URA held firm to secure an important point away from home.
The result leaves Vipers top of the table with 60 points from 27 matches, five ahead of second-placed KCCA. URA remain 11th with 26 points.
Vipers will next visit Police FC on May 12, while URA host Calvary FC the same day.
Uganda Premier League MD 27 action concludes on Saturday, May 9, with Kitara FC hosting NEC FC in Hoima.
