2025/26 Uganda Premier League | Wednesday May 6, 2026 | MD 27
- Lugazi FC Vs Mbarara City FC – Lugazi Stadium, Najjembe- 4 pm
Survival in the Uganda Premier League hangs in the balance as Mbarara City head into Wednesday’s clash against Lugazi FC at Najjembe, knowing every point and every result elsewhere could define their season.
The Ankole Lions arrive boosted by a 2-1 win over Express FC, a result that ended a 10-match winless run and briefly eased relegation fears.
That was only their second win in 11 matches, the previous one coming against Calvary FC.
Before that, Mbarara City had endured a poor run of seven defeats and just two points from 27, leaving them stuck in the relegation fight.
They now sit on 20 points, just five above the drop zone, with four matches left. The margin for error is gone.
Coach Zaidi Byekwaso travels to Najjembe without Marvin Busulwa, though Muhammad Kanyike and Wyclif Ahumuza return to the squad.
There is added tension in the dugout. Lugazi FC are coached by Simon Peter Mugerwa, a former Mbarara City boss who was sacked in November last year after collecting just two points from six games.
Lugazi, 12th with 23 points, are also not safe. They come into the game confident after a 2-0 win over Buhimba United Saints, with goals from Freedom Mungudit and Hamza Mulambuzi.

The first round meeting ended 0-0, while last season’s match at Najjembe finished 1-1, a reminder of how tight this fixture usually is.
Elsewhere, Calvary FC face Police FC in Yumbe at 4 pm. If Calvary lose, and both Mbarara City and UPDF FC win their matches, Calvary’s survival hopes could be over.
