Team Uganda added a great bit of colour to a truly spectacular opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, last night the first ever to be held indoors.
The flag-waving Ugandans caught the eye in their beautiful traditional ceremonial wear as they marched on a night graced by His Majesty King Charles, the King of the United Kingdom.
Magnificent in a Scottish kilt, Uganda’s Dr. Don Rukare, the current President of Commonwealth Sport, welcomed the Commonwealth community. That community from all around the world included a Ugandan government delegation led by the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, as the smartly clad Team Uganda joined 73 other nations in the customary parade that highlighted the opening night.
“Sport has the power to bring people together in a world that often feels divided, and that matters more than ever. Tonight, every flag here is equal. Every athlete carries the hope of their nation,” Dr. Rukare addressed the congregation, adding.
Every volunteer, every official, every supporter becomes part of something bigger than themselves. This is what Commonwealth Sport is about: not just competition, but connection, not only medals, but moments that will truly last a lifetime.
“Over the coming days, records will fall, medals will be won, champions will emerge, and somewhere in this beautiful city, a young person will watch all of you athletes and quietly decide, ‘One day, that will be me.”
