2026 FIFA World Cup | Group E | Monday June 15
- Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador
Amad Diallo struck in the dying moments to hand Ivory Coast a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening Group E match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday.
Just when the game appeared headed for a goalless draw, the Manchester United winger arrived at the right place to side-foot home Wilfried Singo’s low cross in the 90th minute, sealing Ivory Coast’s first World Cup win since 2014.
The result puts the reigning African champions in a strong position as they chase a historic place in the knockout stage for the first time.
Ecuador, backed by a large and passionate crowd at Philadelphia Stadium, came closest to scoring in the first half. John Yeboah rattled the crossbar after capitalising on a defensive mistake before Alan Minda struck the woodwork again minutes later.
Ivory Coast gradually grew into the game and created chances of their own. Nicolas Pepe was denied by a timely challenge, while Elye Wahi hit the crossbar shortly after the restart from a cross by the lively Yan Diomande.
Seko Fofana also forced a save from goalkeeper Hernan Galindez as the Elephants searched for a breakthrough.
With both sides struggling to find a finishing touch, a draw looked inevitable. But Singo’s powerful run down the right flank late in the game opened up Ecuador’s defence, and Diallo made no mistake from close range to spark celebrations among the Ivorians.
The defeat was a disappointing start for Ecuador, whose defence had been one of the strongest during South American qualifying, conceding only five goals in 18 matches.
Ivory Coast will now turn their attention to a crucial clash against Germany, who opened their campaign with a commanding 7-1 win over Curaçao. Ecuador will seek their first points when they face Curaçao in Kansas City.
