Ivory Coast let a precious lead slip as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Germany in a thrilling World Cup Group E clash on Saturday, leaving the Elephants facing an anxious wait to secure a place in the knockout stage.

For much of the match in Toronto, Ivory Coast looked set to take a giant step towards the last 32.

Franck Kessie gave the West Africans the lead in the first half after reacting quickest to turn home a rebound from Amad Diallo’s effort. The move had started with a surging run and cross from Yan Diomande down the left.

The Elephants defended bravely and frustrated Germany, who had two goals ruled out before the break.

But the game changed in the second half. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann introduced Deniz Undav from the bench and the striker transformed the contest. Undav equalised in the 68th minute with a controlled volley before completing the comeback with a fine turn and finish that left goalkeeper Yahia Fofana with no chance.

Simon Adingra had an opportunity to rescue a point late on, but failed to get a shot away inside the area as Germany held on.

The defeat was Ivory Coast’s first in Group E and leaves them on three points from two matches. They must now avoid defeat against Curacao in their final group game to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
