Ugandan long-distance runner Stella Chesang scooped bronze at the Hamburg Marathon on Sunday.
The 2018 Commonwealth Gold Medalist in 10,000m completed the 42km race in 2:20:23
In so doing, Chesang surpassed the previous national record of 2:23:13, held by Juliet Chekwel.
It should be remembered she also holds the national records for both the 3000m and 10,000m races.
She came short of gold and silver medalists Dorcas Tuitoek of Kenya and Tiruye Mesfin of Ethiopia, who posted 2:20:09 and 2:20:18 respectively.
Chesang was however a little too fast for Ethiopia’s Tsige Haileslase and Kenya’s Marion Kibor who came fourth and fifth respectively.
It was a superb show for Chesang who kept close with the leading pack from start to finish.
Ethiopia’s, Mesfin Kumeshi Sichala, Haileslase, Sintayehu Tilahun, Marion Zenebu Bihonzg, plus Kenya’s Kibor and Tuitoek were the front runners.
That was before Tuitoek pulled away from a cramped-up Mesfin to win gold, as Chesang ran her legs off to bronze.
