Today, the Uganda Rugby Union has summoned ten individuals to start exclusive preparations to defend the Africa 7s.
The 2023 Africa Men’s 7s games are scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club from 16th to 17th September.
Led by Captain and KOBs centre Ian Munyani, the squad comprises fellow boys in blue Adrian Kasito and Mark Osuna, Heathens playmaker Aaron Ofoywroth and speedster Norbert Okeny.
Pirates enforcer Alex Aturinda and playmaker William Nkore, Rhinos’s Allan Olango, Denis Etwau of the Jinja Hippos, and ASBC’s Philip Wokorach.
The nine locally based players have been subsequently stood down from participating in the local National 7s calendar, with their sole focus now being to get in sync for the Africa 7s title defence.
On top of the 10 is another list of 5 who have been permitted to participate in the Kyadondo 7s as their last tour on the local scene and then lend their undivided attention to the Africa 7s preparations.
This list sees the return of heavy hitten Byron Oketayot, whizkid Karim Arinaitwe, the hard-running Pius Ogena and Pirates’ new kid on the block, Mubarak Wandera.
Last week, we published a story indicating Ogena’s fortunes were changing for the better as he was on the road back into the 7s fold, and we are glad to see that he’s ever closer to representing the Black-Yellow-Red on the international scene.
Michael Wokorach is transitioning away from the national team, as we saw him hand over the Captain’s reigns to Ian Munyani, and Timothy Kisiga is away from this team owing to professional demands.
