When Sheila Agonzibwa Richardson was elected to the executive committee of the Confederation of African Handball last year in December, many targeted her Ugandan seat.
Her becoming the first woman to hold such a position since the organization’s founding in 1973 saw Uganda Handball Federation (UHF) executive members show interest in the presidency.
This brought an end to her two-plus decades of leadership as she opted out to concentrate on her continental position, paving the way for the election of Fred Barenzi over the weekend.
Barenzi, a teacher at Mukono High School, beat Willy Mayanja and Hanington Musoke to become the new UHF president for the next four years following polls held at the Old Kampala Arena on Saturday.
The former Vice President in charge of Administration polled 56 votes ahead of Mayanja and Musoke, who received 36 and 32 votes respectively, in a race that attracted delegates from over 80 districts.
Mayanja, the outgoing Vice President in charge of technical affairs and one of the longest-serving members on the executive, will be on the sidelines for the first time in two decades.
In the other posts, Simon Opoloti from Soroti won the position of Vice President unopposed, while Margaret Awori defeated incumbent secretary Carl Mugalu 85–46.
Former General Secretary Saudah Babirye returned unopposed as treasurer, and Vicent Kasala of Kawanda Secondary School also returned unopposed as Assistant General Secretary in an election where teachers dominated the top seats.
Wasswa Authuman beat Dan Musoke to take the post of Commissioner for Organising and Competitions, Moses Kihembo defeated Ismael Bazanye to become Commissioner for Beach Handball, and Henry Mujuzi returned as Commissioner for Referees.
