Joel Sserunjogi struck at the perfect moment to hand KCCA a hard fought 1-0 win over Kitara and lifted them into second place in the Uganda Premier League on Friday night at Phillip Omondi Stadium.

The midfielderโ€™s low shot from outside the box, seconds before halftime, settled a tight contest and moved KCCA to 48 points, four behind leaders Vipers.

KCCA came into the match needing a response after their loss to SC Villa, and they showed it early.

Brian Jjara tested Kitaraโ€™s defense in the opening minutes, while Lazaro Muhindo nearly punished his former side but lacked support in the box.

Kitara, who were also chasing ground on the leaders after drawing with Vipers, looked dangerous from set pieces.

Living Kabon almost scored directly from a corner, but Sammy Ssebaduka cleared the danger.

The breakthrough came in the 44th minute when Saidi Mayanja set up Sserunjogi, who calmly fired into the bottom corner.

Kitara made several changes after the break, throwing on fresh legs in search of an equalizer, but KCCA held firm. Solid defending and discipline saw them protect their lead to the final whistle.

The win keeps KCCA firmly in the title race, while Kitara miss a chance to close the gap at the top.

KCCA next face Entebbe UPPC away on Tuesday, with Kitara set to host Calvary.

Matchday 23 action wraps up on Saturday April 18, as NEC face Maroons at the Phillip Omondi, Stadium at 8 pm.
