The Ugandan cricket fraternity held a variety of activities on Independence Day, ranging from the grassroots to the national league level across all regions.

In Jinja, one of the country’s strongest cricket hubs, five teams gathered at Jinja SS to compete in the 2026 Jinja Independence Sixes Cup, with the Wairaka Hurricanes ultimately emerging victorious.

The Hurricanes won all four of their matches in style to finish the tournament unbeaten with eight points, honoring Uganda’s 64 years of self-rule.

Wairaka opened their campaign with an eight-wicket victory over the Bugembe Warriors before defeating the Wakitaka Gladiators by nine wickets in their second game.

They maintained their winning run with another nine-wicket triumph over the Kakira Barbarians before wrapping up their campaign with a 31-run victory against the Budondo Pirates.

The tournament organizer and Cricket Uganda Regional Development Officer for the Jinja and Busoga region, Sadam Oyaga, was impressed by the skills on display.

“By holding such tournaments, we give our young players an opportunity to grow in the game, apply themselves on the field, and develop their game awareness for the benefit of the entire region,” Oyaga noted.

The tournament was organized by the Jinja Association of Cricket Clubs (JACC) in partnership with Cricket Uganda as part of their continued efforts to develop the game and provide a platform for young players.

“A couple of players utilized the platform and shone bright. It is in such tournaments where you get a chance to compete with some of the best in the region,” Oyaga added.
