2026 FIFA World Cup | Group B | Saturday June 13, 2026
- Qatar 1-1 Switzerland
Boualem Khoukhi’s stoppage time header earned Qatar a historic first point at the FIFA World Cup finals as they snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Group B on Saturday.
The defender rose highest to meet Homam El Amin’s cross in the 94th minute, sparking wild celebrations among the Qatar players and fans. The goal marked a significant moment for the Gulf nation, which lost all three matches during its World Cup debut as hosts in 2022.
For most of the game, Switzerland looked set for victory. Murat Yakฤฑn’s side controlled possession, created the better chances and took the lead in the first half through Breel Embolo’s penalty.

The striker converted after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada brought down Remo Freuler in the box, although replays suggested the Swiss midfielder may have been marginally offside in the build-up.
Switzerland had several opportunities to put the match beyond Qatar’s reach but failed to take them. Nottingham Forest forward Dan Ndoye missed a series of good chances, while Ruben Vargas and Embolo were also denied by poor finishing.
Those missed opportunities proved costly. Despite spending long spells on the back foot, Qatar stayed in the contest and made the most of their late chance. El Amin delivered a teasing cross into the area and Khoukhi powered home a header to rescue a memorable point.
The result denied Switzerland what had seemed a routine win and leaves Group B finely balanced ahead of their upcoming matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada.
The final whistle signaled a landmark result that secured the country’s first ever point on football’s biggest stage.
