2026 FIFA World Cup | Group K | Tuesday June 17
- Portugal 1-1 DR Congo
The parents of late Portugal forward Diogo Jota were in attendance as DR Congo earned a historic 1-1 draw on return against Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Houston on Wednesday.

Watching from a luxury suite at NRG Stadium, Jota’s parents saw Portugal stumble against a determined Congolese side playing at the World Cup for the first time in 52 years.
Portugal made the perfect start when João Neves headed home Pedro Neto’s cross in the sixth minute.
But DR Congo refused to be overwhelmed by one of the tournament favourites. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Arthur Masuaku delivered a cross that Yoane Wissa powered into the net with a header to level the score.
The goal was a landmark moment for DR Congo. It was the country’s first-ever World Cup goal and helped secure its first point on football’s biggest stage.
The Leopards had lost all three matches and failed to score during their only previous World Cup appearance in 1974, when the nation competed as Zaire.
Portugal pushed for a winner after the break but lacked a cutting edge. Cristiano Ronaldo, making his sixth World Cup appearance, endured a frustrating night and failed to register a shot on target.
João Cancelo thought he had restored Portugal’s lead with a spectacular bicycle kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside. At the other end, Cédric Bakambu came close to completing a famous upset when his effort struck the post.
Bruno Fernandes also missed a late opportunity as Portugal were forced to settle for a point.
The result continued a positive start for African nations at the tournament following Cape Verde’s goalless draw against Spain earlier in the week.
For Portugal, it was a disappointing result. For DR Congo, it was a night of history, pride and a first 2026 World Cup point that will be remembered for generations.
