The 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership playoffs final between Black Pirates and Buffaloes promises to be more than a contest for silverware. It is a meeting of two teams whose journeys to Kings Park Arena have been shaped by resilience, belief and hard work.

For defending champions Black Pirates, the road to the final has been particularly emotional.

Just days before their semifinal against Heathens, the club was devastated by the death of player Sydney Gongodyo, whose life was tragically cut short in an incident of mob violence.

Despite the tragedy, the Pirates rallied together. Led on the field by Isaac Massa and Frank Kidega, and guided by coach Marvin Odongo, they defeated Heathens 15-3 in the first leg before surviving a spirited fightback in the return leg to progress 36-30 on aggregate.

As they chase a fourth league title, Odongo believes his side is ready for the challenge.

“Preparations have gone well. We’ve gone through our paces, and the players have worked hard throughout the week. The focus has been excellent, and we’re looking forward to what should be a great final between two quality sides,” Odongo said.

The Pirates needed extra time to beat Jinja Hippos in last year’s final, but Odongo hopes his side can finish the job within 80 minutes this time.

“We’ve done our part to ensure the boys are in the best shape they can be. They have earned the right to play in this final despite a rough few weeks, and I have no doubt they’ll make themselves proud on Saturday,” he added.

However, the Pirates know they face a Buffaloes side enjoying one of its best seasons in recent memory.

Buffaloes have reached their first final since 2013, when they lost to Heathens. The Kyadondo side lost only three matches during the regular season and have impressed throughout the playoffs, winning three games and drawing one.

Their only defeat to Pirates this season came in a narrow 23-17 contest, giving them confidence ahead of Saturday’s showdown.

“What is a final without some pressure anyway?” Odongo said, urging his players to embrace the occasion.

Buffaloes coach Charles Onen says his team has made good use of the two-week break since their semifinal.

“The preparations have been going well since our last semifinal. We’ve had two weeks to prepare and have used them well. We are focusing on our set pieces and what happens after them,” Onen said.

Although many have labelled Buffaloes underdogs, Onen insists his side is approaching the final with calmness rather than pressure.

“We are just thinking about how best to execute what we’ve been doing throughout the season. There is no pressure, just calmness, and we are ready to increase our work rate, knowing we are facing the defending champions,” Onen noted.

“The best thing for us is that we have challenged them before and believe we can do it again as we fight for the top position.”

Pirates bring experience, having reached every final since 2023. Buffaloes bring momentum and hunger as they seek a first title.

Whichever side prevails, Saturday’s final has all the ingredients of a memorable occasion.
