Black Pirates cemented their place in Ugandan rugby history on Saturday, edging Buffaloes 30-29 in a thrilling Uganda Rugby Premiership final at Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere to successfully defend their title.
The dramatic one-point victory saw the Sea Robbers become the first club to retain the league crown under the current playoff format. It was also their fourth Premiership title, adding to earlier triumphs in 2018, 2023 and 2025.
The triumph capped an emotional season for coach Marvin Odongo’s side, who rallied together in the wake of teammate Sydney Gongodyo’s tragic death just weeks before the playoffs.
Having overcome old rivals Heathens in a grueling semifinal, Pirates entered the final carrying both expectation and the weight of history. Standing in their way was a Buffaloes side chasing a first-ever league title.
Pirates started strongly, playing with pace and precision to take control of the contest. Their dominance earned them a 25-13 lead at halftime and left Buffaloes facing an uphill task.
But Buffaloes refused to fade away. The challengers returned with renewed belief, throwing everything forward and punishing mistakes as they mounted a stunning comeback. What had looked like a comfortable afternoon for Pirates soon turned into a nerve-racking battle.
As the clock ticked down, tension gripped Kings Park. Every tackle and turnover mattered as Buffaloes pushed for a historic victory.
However, Pirates dug deep and held firm under intense late pressure. When the final whistle sounded, jubilant scenes erupted around Kings Park as players, coaches and supporters celebrated a historic achievement.
