Denis Musali signed off from a glittering 24 season career at Wanderers Cricket Club in fitting fashion as the 2024 Men’s National T20 Cricket League champions beat St John’s SS Mukono by 31 runs at the Lugogo Cricket Oval on Saturday.

The Cricket Uganda Men’s 50 Over League match, played mainly for pride after Wanderers’ narrow two wicket loss to SKLPS CC on the previous game day, turned into an emotional farewell for one of Uganda’s most respected cricketers.

Musali, a former Wanderers captain and long serving wicketkeeper batsman, made his final appearance in league cricket and scored 17 runs off 57 balls before falling to Ronald Mulumba.

While the innings was modest, it reflected the determination and patience that defined a career spanning more than two decades.

Musali leaves the game as one of Wanderers’ most loyal servants, having played since the 2003 season since his Busoga College Mwiri days. He was part of Uganda’s squad at the 2004 ICC U-19 World Cup alongside Davis Arinaitwe and Arthur Kyobe, and has remained influential both on and off the field.

Away from playing, Musali has continued to serve the sport in administration. Since March 2025, he has been the Honorary Secretary of Cricket Uganda, overseeing key development and digital initiatives. Before that, he spent nearly five years as the association’s Head of Communications and Marketing, having earlier served as organising secretary.

Wanderers posted 135 in 39.5 overs after a shaky start. Edgar Mudoola top-scored with 29 while Rudra Prajapati added 20. St John’s shared the wickets, with Ronald Mulumba and Wilson Otieno taking three apiece.

Defending a modest target, Wanderers struck early and never allowed St John’s to settle. Arthur Magwa removed Joshua Ainomugisha for a duck in the opening over before Eria Kasule and Ivan Kakande tightened the screws.

Kasule finished with impressive figures of 4 for 21, while Kakande claimed 3 for 26 as St John’s were bowled out for 104 in 25.2 overs.

Mathias Ssentongo (25) and Jonah Nsamba (37) offered some resistance, but regular wickets kept Wanderers firmly in control. Fittingly, Musali also made an impact behind the stumps, completing a stumping in his farewell appearance.

As the final wicket fell, the celebrations belonged to Musali, whose contribution to Ugandan cricket stretches far beyond the boundary rope. His playing days may be over, but his influence on the game is set to continue.
