After a 52-year wait, DR Congo are finally back at the FIFA World Cup, carrying with them a squad packed with experienced stars and exciting young talent ready to make their mark on football’s biggest stage.

The Leopards, who last appeared at the tournament in 1974, secured their place at the 2026 World Cup after a dramatic qualification campaign that saw them overcome Cameroon, Nigeria and Jamaica through a series of tense play-off matches.

Now, under the guidance of head coach Sébastien Desabre, DR Congo head to the United States, Mexico and Canada believing they can compete against the world’s best.

Leading the charge is captain Chancel Mbemba, the defensive rock whose leadership has been central to the team’s revival. The experienced centre-back not only anchors the defence but also delivered one of the most important goals in qualification, scoring the late winner against Cameroon in the African play-offs.

In attack, much will depend on the experience of Cédric Bakambu and the form of Yoane Wissa. Bakambu remains the team’s proven goalscorer, while Wissa arrives at the tournament after an impressive qualifying campaign in which he contributed six goals.

The squad also boasts the quality of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whose switch to DR Congo has strengthened the defence, and Simon Banza, a powerful striker capable of changing games with a single opportunity.

While the veterans provide leadership, several young players could emerge as the stars of the tournament.

Goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo, 21, is regarded as one of the country’s brightest prospects and represents the future between the posts.

In midfield, Noah Sadiki has become one of the most exciting young talents in the squad. The 21-year-old combines energy, intelligence and creativity, making him a key link between defence and attack.

Another player to watch is Ngal’ayel Mukau. Also 21, the Lille midfielder has earned praise for his composure, ball-winning ability and maturity beyond his years. Many see him as a potential breakout star at the World Cup.

Winger Nathanaël Mbuku adds pace and flair, giving the Leopards another weapon as they prepare to face some of the world’s strongest teams.

The man behind DR Congo’s rise is Desabre. Since taking charge in 2022, the former Uganda Cranes coach has transformed the Leopards into one of Africa’s most organised and competitive sides. His ability to unite experienced internationals with emerging talent has been key to the team’s success.

DR Congo face a difficult Group K campaign against Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan, but they travel with confidence and momentum.

For a nation returning to the World Cup after more than five decades, the blend of proven stars and fearless youngsters offers hope that the Leopards can create new history and announce themselves on the global stage once again.

Ugandan fans will be able to follow every moment of the tournament, with all 104 matches available live on DStv across all subscription packages and on GOtv Plus packages and above.
