Home Athletics Nanyondo finishes outside medal bracket In Morocco Diamond League

Ugandan runner Winnie Nanyondo was short of her former best as she finished seventh in the Women’s 1500m race at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday.

About three years ago in 2019 at the same venue (Meeting International Mohammed VI), Nanyondo set her 1500m personal best in 2019 of 3:59.56, but, fell short this time round.

On Sunday however, she clocked 4:02.74 in a race won by Ethiopia’s Hirut Meshesha (3:57.30) while Hailu Freweyni and Embaye Axumawit completed the Ethiopian dominance.

It was a one position improvement for Nanyondo, who clocked 4.00.25 to finish eighth at the Eugene Diamond League in May.

She will be hoping to do better at the 2022 World Championships in the Oregon state, slated for July 2022.

Nanyondo is mostly remembered for winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

In Rabat, Olympic champion, Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica Jamaica clocked 10.83 to claim victory in the women’s 100m race.
