Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo overcame a slow start to walk home with bronze in the 5000m race on the last day of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States of America.

The long distance runner posted 13:10.20 thanks to a stunning 50-metre sprint to win Uganda’s third medal and the highest tally ever for the nation at the Championships.

Meanwhile, favorite and world record holder, Joshua Cheptegei struggled, finishing a distant ninth (9th) having clocked 13:13.12.

Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen impressively posted 13:09.24 to win gold whilst Kenya’s Jacob Krop won silver having reached the finish line in second position.

Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega who won gold at the 10,000m Olympics in 2021, also finished a dismal 12th while his compatriots Edris Muktar (13) and Yomif Kejelcha (8) endured a tough race too.

Grant Fisher (6) of the United States and Kenyan duo Nicholas Kipkorir (7) and Daniel Simiu (10) finished outside the medal bracket.

At the coveted event, the Pearl of Africa got ranked 16th overall after winning three medals including one gold (Cheptegei in the 10000m) plus Jacob Kiplimo’s bronze in the same race over a week back.
