AFCON Qualifiers: Uganda locked in must-win tie with Tanzania

It will be all guns out for the Uganda Cranes, with no room for slip-ups when they play hosts to regional nemesis Tanzania in the qualifiers of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Cranes will however feel the pinch of hosting away from home, as the Friday game will take center in Egypt at the Suez Canal Stadium, Ismailia.

This was after the continental football custodians CAF, deemed no stadium in the country (Uganda) fit to host a game of that magnitude.

Cranes’ head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevich will be keen for his side to pick a positive result, to make up for the already lost points in the initial group matches.

Having lost away to Algeria and picked up just a point against Niger at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende last year, the Cranes sit rock-bottom in Group F with a single point.

Tanzania, also with one point, sits third while Niger and Algeria are second and first with two and six points respectively.

Victory for Micho on Friday will ignite the team’s progression chances, especially because Uganda and the Taifa Stars will be meeting yet again on Tuesday, to complete a quick doubleheader.

Uganda holds dominion over Tanzania in the recent past, carrying four victories ahead of the latter one.

However, the Taifa Stars won the most recent meeting, a 1-0 victory in an international friendly thanks to Simon Msuva‘s goal.

Micho has been buoyed by the return of goalkeeper Salim Jamal Magoola and defender Joseph Ochaya to the fold, both of whom have been in scintillating form with their respective clubs.
