2027 AFCON Qualifiers:
Tunisia 1–1 Uganda
Scotland-based forward Rogers Mato was on the scoresheet as the Uganda Cranes picked up a valuable away point in Tunisia.
The Hearts player cancelled out Adem Arous’s 12th-minute goal, which had given Tunisia an early lead and control of the game under the floodlights.
Down at the halftime break, the Uganda Cranes kept pushing down the right wing, and Rogers Mato found the back of the net in the 68th minute.
Nathan Asiimwe, playing for English side Salford City, led the attack and lofted an inch-perfect pass, which Mato controlled superbly before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.
This came after Uganda’s first change in the 63rd minute, when James Bogere replaced Travis Mutyaba to add more pace upfront, a substitution that soon paid dividends.
With Tunisia pushing for a winner, Paul Put made a double substitution with only eight minutes left of normal time, introducing Steven Mukwala for goalscorer Rogers Mato, while Allan Oyirwoth replaced Allan Okello.
Uganda is already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON finals as one of the three co-hosts alongside Kenya and Tanzania; however, the Cranes are competing in the qualifiers to determine who else advances from Group H.
After securing a hard-fought draw against Tunisia, Uganda will fly back home for their next fixture on Tuesday, when they host Libya at the Hoima City Stadium.
Libya will arrive having drawn 2-2 with Botswana in their opening Group H fixture, while Tunisia will travel to face Botswana in their second assignment of the campaign.
