Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has revealed that the Cranes have withdrawn from the African Nations Championships (CHAN) finals that are set for 2023 in Algeria.
The damning revelation was made by the federation top boss, Moses Hassim Magogo today morning, asserting that they were short of funds to facilitate the side.
“Like for the U23, we are left with no further option but to withdraw the Uganda Cranes from CHAN finals because the ministry of finance has not provided the funds as appropriated by Parliament,” read a tweet from the FUFA President.
“Sorry for the players and coaches who qualified the team but it is the moment to face the reality,” he added, with a tone of disappointment.
“The sanctions to Uganda will affect the future if we don’t take the hard decision now,” Magogo noted in his tweet.
This comes at a time when different sports federations, FUFA inclusive have put the National Council of Sports (NCS) in the spotlight over failure to release designated funds to the respective associations.
It’s another blow for the flag as in October, the Uganda U-23 team withdrew from the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as they were set to face Guinea in the final qualification round.
Uganda dumped Tanzania to qualify for CHAN after a 3-0 victory at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, but will now watch on as the other nations tussle it out.
