Ali Lutwama crowned a memorable season by emerging as the biggest winner at the 2025/26 University Football League (UFL) Awards held at Kati Kati in Lugogo on Monday.
The Muteesa I Royal University captain walked away with three individual accolades; Most Valuable Player, Best Midfielder and Top Assister after inspiring his side to a momentous first UFL title.

Lutwama was at the heart of Muteesa’s championship-winning campaign, scoring four goals and providing four assists in nine matches. His influence was further recognised with a place in the Team of the Season.
The midfielder’s achievements capped a dream season for Muteesa I Royal University, who defeated YMCA Comprehensive Institute 1-0 in the final at Nakivubo Stadium to lift their maiden league trophy.
Muteesa’s success was also reflected on the touchline, with head coach George Williams Ssengabi named Coach of the Season after guiding the university to the title.
While Lutwama stole the spotlight, other outstanding performers were also rewarded. YMCA’s Kevin Ssenabulya was named Best Goalkeeper, St. Lawrence University’s Vincent Agaku won Best Defender, and Uganda Martyrs University’s Ronald Obedgiu finished as the league’s top scorer.

David Aheebwa of Mountains of the Moon University received the Best New Player award, while Stephen Onyait of Kumi University was recognised as Best Sports Tutor. Brian Katete’s strike for MUBS against St. Lawrence University earned the Goal of the Season award.

The ceremony was attended by Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) president George Wagogo, vice president Sam Lukaire, general secretary Patrick Ssebuliba and Commissioner for Physical Education Sammy Odong, who represented the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The season ended with Muteesa I Royal University on top, YMCA Comprehensive Institute finishing runners-up and Kampala University taking third place after defeating St. Lawrence University in the playoff.
Since its launch in 2012 as a small Super Six competition, the University Football League has grown into one of Uganda’s leading university sporting events. As the curtain fell on another season, no player left a bigger mark than Lutwama, whose leadership and performances drove Muteesa I Royal University to their first league crown.
