2025/2026 University Football League | Final | Saturday May 2,
- Muteesa I Royal University 1-0 YMCA Institute
A new champion is in town and they have wasted no time announcing themselves.
Muteesa I Royal University wrote their name into University Football League history with a hard earned 1-0 win over YMCA Institute, sealing their first title in a tense final at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. For a team in only its second season.
The Royal Lions now join rare company. Only Kampala University had previously won the title within their first two seasons, back in 2013.
Muteesa, who entered the competition in 2025, have matched that feat with this 2026 triumph.
The final was tight and cautious from the start. YMCA, playing their first final, came closest to scoring early.
In the 22nd minute, Makubuya Trevor found space in a dangerous area but failed to control his effort, letting a big chance slip.
They were punished moments later, in the 28th minute, Bukenya Twaha delivered a precise cross that found Mutambo Sam, who rose highest to head home the only goal of the game. It proved decisive.
From then on, Muteesa stayed compact and disciplined. They managed the game well, shutting out YMCA’s attempts to respond and holding firm until the final whistle.
For YMCA, it was a painful end to an impressive run. Reaching their first final remains a strong sign of progress.
Kampala University claimed third place with a 1-0 win over St Lawrence University, thanks to Raymond Kiwewa’s goal.
