Uganda Gazelles star Jane Asinde has been named Conference USA (CUSA) Newcomer of the Year for her impressive performance leading the UTEP Miners in the regular season.
Jane swept a host of accolades, being awarded CUSA Newcomer of the Year, and nominated on the CUSA All-Conference First Team and the CUSA All-Defensive Team.
The CUSA All-First Team consisted of FIU’s Kone, Liberty’s Emma Hess and Bella Smuda, LA Tech’s Anna Larr Roberson, MTSU’s Boldyreva and Wheeler, NM State’s Molly Kaiser, UTEP’s Asinde.

Jane was recognised alongside fellow UTEP women’s basketball players Erin Wilson and Aaliyah Stanton who all earned All-Conference USA honors, the league office announced on Monday.
“UTEP’s Jane Asinde, a Wichita State transfer, garnered Newcomer of the Year honors in a sensational first year with the Miners. During Conference USA play, Asinde ranked second in the league in scoring (17.2), second in rebounding (9.6) and third in field goal percentage (.505). The senior forward tallied a career-high effort with 28 points at FIU and a career-high in rebounds (16) at Jax State. Asinde also leads the league with the most double-doubles (12),” reads an excerpt from the CUSA website.
Asinde started all 28 appearances in the regular season while leading UTEP in points (16.5), rebounds (9.2), steals (1.8), and sharing the team lead in blocks (0.6).
She also ranks second on the squad in assists (1.6). She earned CUSA Player of the Week honors on 2/26/24. Asinde ranked second in the league in scoring and rebounding, while sitting fourth in steals and 10th in blocked shots.
Asinde also ranks 23rd in CUSA in assists. She ranks fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (47.2), eighth in free throw percentage (69.2), and 11th in minutes per game (30.9).
On Tuesday, No. 8 UTEP (12-18) defeated No. 9 Sam Houston (7-22) 78-64 in the first round of the 2024 CUSA Basketball Championships on Tuesday evening at Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center.
Luisa Vydrova helped guide the Miners to victory with a career-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. The true freshman also grabbed six boards with an assist and a steal. Jane registered 18 points UTEP will take on the top-seeded MTSU Lady Raiders at 11:30 a.m. CT Wednesday morning.
