2026 National Basketball League | Women | Friday May 15

  • UCU Lady Canons 57-42 Magic Stormers

Through Social media posts displayed on different personal accounts, it all shows the Ugandan basketball fraternity spent Friday grieving the loss of Maxine Modesta Anyango, a young player many believed was destined for greatness in the women’s game.

A vigil was scheduled for Friday night at St Mariam Daggun Primary School, Kamwokya before a requiem service at Kamwokya Catholic Church on Saturday morning. The body will later travel to Tororo ahead of Sunday’s burial.

Hours after the heartbreaking news, the National Basketball League resumed at Lugogo Indoor Arena, where Martrina Anyango inspired UCU Lady Canons to a 57-42 victory over Magic Stormers.

UCU completed a season double over the Stormers but had to recover from a slow start. Magic Stormers led 12-10 after the first quarter and remained competitive throughout the first half before UCU tied the game at 25 all by halftime.

The Lady Canons took control after the break, they outscored the Stormers 19-12 in the third quarter to build momentum before closing the game strongly with a dominant 13-5 fourth quarter.

Martrina Anyango led the way with a double double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Mariam Namukwaya added 13 points.

Daphine Adong scored 17 points for Magic Stormers, and Joy Nekesa Mupalia contributed a double double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in defeat.

Magic Stormers struggled offensively for most of the night. They shot just 2 for 24 from three point range, were outrebounded 57-41, and managed only six bench points.

The win improved UCU’s record to 14-2 this season after also beating the Stormers 55-48 in their first round meeting in February.

Magic Stormers dropped to 8-9 after suffering their ninth loss in 17 games.

Saturday’s league action at YMCA will feature Pearl Queens against Angels, KCCA Leopards facing Nabisunsa, JT Lady Jaguars taking on UPDF Lady Tomahawks, City Oilers meeting UMU Flames, and UPDF Tomahawks hosting Nam Blazers.
