Uganda’s women’s 3×3 basketball team will resume its impressive Commonwealth Games campaign today, aiming to build on a flawless opening day that has positioned the side among the early contenders in Glasgow, Scotland.
The quartet of Jamillah Nansikombi, Melissa Akullu, Jane Asinde, and Perus Nyamwenge produced commanding victories over Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Kenya to take control of their group and boost their chances of securing an automatic semi-final berth.
The team faces arguably its toughest assignments yet when it takes on Fiji and Australia, with the group winners advancing directly to the semi-finals. Teams finishing second and third will battle for the remaining two places in the knockout stage.
Forward Melissa Akullu says the team is refreshed and focused after a demanding opening day.“It’s great we have had a day’s rest after yesterday’s marathon. We expect to approach both games with the caution they require, with the aim of positioning us well for the semi-finals,” Akullu said.
Uganda has emerged as one of the standout teams in the competition, combining defensive intensity with efficient scoring as it seeks to challenge for a medal.
Niyoyita targets weightlifting glory
Elsewhere, Ugandan weightlifter Davis Niyoyita begins his campaign in the men’s 60kg category today, hoping to improve on his previous Commonwealth Games performance in Birmingham.
The African number two-ranked lifter will compete in both the snatch and clean and jerk events after completing his final preparations in Glasgow.
Niyoyita expressed confidence ahead of the competition, saying he has settled in well following the journey to Scotland.
“I have trained and seen the venue, and I am sure my muscles are now awake after several hours of travel. Expect the best of me,” Niyoyita said.
With Uganda’s women continuing their pursuit of a semi-final place and Niyoyita chasing weightlifting success, another busy day awaits Team Uganda at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
